Goodbye Sidetrack · 16 February 07

Word on the street is that the Sidetrack Cafe closed down yesterday. This time likely for good.
If you visit www.sidetrackcafe.com it is not entirely evident or obvious that they are closed, aside from the entire entertainment calendar having been wiped clean.
I have to admit to being more sentimentally sad about the old location closing down than I am at this incarnation going out of business (I had a serious soft spot for the old locale after going/playing there for 20-ish years) but it is still a drag. I am mostly concerned for all my friends who worked there. I know they will all land on their feat (they are all clever, able folks) but it is no fun looking for work – especially on such short notice.

Aw, damn.

No Waynefest and no Sidetrack makes the Edmonton concert-goer and music-lover sad. What happens if Steve Derpack stopped working for the SU? We’d be doomed! And the music scene here seems to be so healthy these days, too. Geoff Berner packed the Powerplant last week, but I daresay that a lot of the people there were also there for AA Sound System. My friend got turned away from the Sidetrack last week because Serena Ryder was sold out (though, admittedly, now that she’s on EMI, she’s got someone pushing the promotion).
Doom doom doom!
I’m rounding up friends to go camping in a small ghost town south of Drumheller come the second weekend of September. We’re bringing musical instruments, and clothing appropriate for a scorching heatwave, hailstorms and blizzards. Let your friends know.

heard the closing is lawsuit related and i sure hope one of those involves the interior designer. the new ‘track looked like a dining hall in an old folks’ home…
sucks for the tuneage though. sigh.
