Provincial governments across Canada face what they call in Hollywood a “big-time decision” as they attempt to deal with an American move to extend daylight savings time by two months, so it starts the first weekend of March and ends in November (rather than the April to October stint we enjoy now).
Premier Dalton McGuinty says his government will “seriously” consider its options, citing the need to save energy by cutting the need for artificial light in the evenings (and add it on in the mornings?).
Premier Jean Charest told CBC the province will consider how to gauge the impact of the American change on Quebec’s business community.
Gary Doer told CBC that Manitoba’s transportation sector would be hurt if the province decides not to go along with the new U.S. system.
“There is potential for huge confusion here, and we need to be vigilant, to look at the range of implications,” says Len Crispino, president and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
Ok Ok ok… are we businesses or are we people? Are we more worried about bankers being (more) confused and trade being affected (‘cause god knows one hour difference, for 2 months a year, will absolutely kill the trade market… just ask Japan) than we are worried about sending our kids off to school in the dark… um… more often? Are we really that tied to our southern neighbours that we can’t even stand firm on our own time? We are The North. For some bizarre reason we chose to live in this locale so let’s try and make the best of it, for our own sakes! If the Americans suddenly start buying our beef, trees and water at an even close to fair market price, then we can talk. But until then, our fellow Canadians come first.
